a lot of people are afraid to admit that terrible people can make good art (music, literature, visual art) and I think it’s why so many people go down swinging to defend their favorite artist when they’re unmasked as being a horrible human being or when their controversies and problematic behavior is being addressed. like yes, that was a good book and yes, the author is a horrible person. these two facts do not necessarily contradict each other. this isn’t true for JK Rowling, who writes absolute garbage and hates trans people and pretty much every minority imaginable.

TERFs will say “you only hate her because she’s standing up for [cis] women!” when she is not doing that at all and also extremely racist and a bad writer.

The Phantom of the Opera: I was born with facial deformities that are so horrific that even my own mother couldn't bear to look at me.

Me: So that's why you have to live as an outcast in the basements of the opera house?

The Phantom, who has been an admired performer, palace architect, royal executioner, and chief contractor of the opera house who is able to go out in public with no alteration to his face except a false nose and mustache: No, that's a separate choice that I've made.

my favorite thing about punch-up jokes (such as "i hate all tmes," "white people are so annoying," etc) is their infinite capacity for weeding out false allies. because, y'know, jokes at the expense of an oppressive group shouldn't hurt you if you understand yourself to be a member of that privileged group who genuinely works to fight that oppression. your guilt and discomfort is a tell.

I cannot wrap my head around all of the terrible in-law stories from women on Reddit as a man because my tolerance for bullshit from my family is so low. If my girlfriend was like “Your grandma is making me really uncomfortable.” I’d be like “Right. We’re leaving.” and wait for her to get in the car before being like “Nana, what the fuck were you saying to her, you shitty old fuck?” It’s totally baffling to me to see these dudes spent 18+ years in their nasty toxic families and then still remain up their mama’s ass to the detriment of their S/O, their children and themselves. Maybe it’s because I’ve never had a healthy family but if I even met someone who was like “I have Sunday dinner with my family every week as a grown adult and I ask my mom permission for every major thing I do and if you’re not interested in having Forced Family Fun Time every week, I don’t think we can be together.” I’d think that is weird and a turnoff and not cute at all.

THIS IS NOT GOOD!!!

Jack Dorsey funded this with his nonprofit AndOtherStuff. The home page for the organization explicitly lists AI as one of its pillars, saying a goal is "making NOSTR the best social protocol for open source AI development and implementation"

What is open source AI?

It's a program that publicly shares its code for free online, so that anyone can use it for themselves. This means that anything this AI is trained on could eventually make its way into any business, social media site, etc. That uses this code. Or, if not, it'll have the ability to harvest content as well as this.

Even since the app doesn't allow AI openly on the videos themselves, the app is likely to use our original content to train its AI. You might have seen that some AI have experienced a positive feedback loop of declining quality, training itself on other AI slop until anything it produces is unintelligible.

This is likely an attempt to prevent that in video format

Then, any other company that wants to use the code can use this better trained AI to make it even harder to recognize AI across the board.

You can read about the connection to AndOtherStuff, as well as the developers' reasons for the project here:

TLDR; do not give Jack Dorsey any credit for this, do not download the app, and tell others not to either. It's a nostalgia-bait attempt at fueling another AI model
